Does the government support businesses employing staff for research and development activities?
The government provides a 40 percent salary subsidy for a duration of three months starting from 15 April, 2020, in order to retain the highly educated staff of the research, development and innovation sector. It is essential to retain the employment status of several ten thousand professionals to restart the economy, thus companies can apply for the subsidy for engineers, researchers, computer scientists, as well as other professionals. All non-government agency employers pursuing research and development activities throughout all sectors of the economy are eligible for the subsidy. Eligibility for the subsidy requires that the employee not receive any other forms of employment subsidies for the same employment relationship, and that they be employed as part of the research and development staff of the employer at latest from the starting date of the state of emergency. The request for such subsidy shall be submitted in compliance with the information available on the National Employment Service official website. The monthly amount of the subsidy may not exceed HUF 318 920 per employee. The employer shall submit the subsidy request during the state of emergency, or within one month from the date of termination of such state, to the government administration office with jurisdiction over the employer's official seat of business or operational site.
